In the early 1800s Kōnen Sakamoto (1800-1853) authored a three-volume picture album entitled Tsutsuji Fu (Azalaea Album). The 42 pictures of azaleas included in volume 1 are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Kōnen drew each of the azaleas accurately but most of the associated Japanese plant names are no longer used. Consequently, their scientific species name is unknown. Many of these azaleas are likely hybrids created by Japanese azalea breeders.
